Winter Checklist for Homeowners

Winter Checklist for Homeowners

If the end of January has taught us anything, it’s that you can’t be too prepared for winter weather in the Ozarks! With more cold weather in the forecast, we’ve decided to make a little checklist to help our neighbors in the Ozarks. You know how the old saying goes, “better safe than sorry”.

Winter Weather Checklist

  • Clean your gutters!

Build up in your gutters can stop them from draining water properly, and when it drops below freezing, that water that’s blocked from draining can freeze and become a hazard to your home and you family.

  • Cut down that dead tree!

We’ve all got “that” tree or branch in our yard. The one that’s been there since the beginning of time but isn’t doing to hot anymore. Dead trees and branches near your house simply can’t handle the added weight of snow, and this just might be the year that it decides to fall. We can all hope that it falls into our neighbors yard, but you know that they say “you’re better safe than sorry”.

  • Don’t let those pipes freeze!

Busted pipes are just a part of winter in the Ozarks, but there are steps you can take to prevent it from happening. Keeping that thermostat at a minimum of 65 degrees is the best thing you can do, but that isn’t all. Hot water pipes bust faster than their cold water friends. With that being said, it’s best to keep your taps dripping hot water so that it doesn’t have a chance to stand still in your pipes and freeze.

  • Know where your water main shut off is!

The last thing you want when your pipes bust is a flooded basement. The best way to be prepared for frozen pipes is to know how to shut the water off when you need to. Considering the state of panic that you’ll be in when you see 6 inches of water standing in your basement. The first thing on your mind will be “how do I make this stop”. Know where your water main shut off is! If you don’t ask your landlord or the previous homeowner.

  • Buy a bag of sidewalk salt!

With all of the headache that winter weather can bring, you probably won’t have a lot of time to stop think about your own safety. We’re here to tell you that you should! Nothing is more important than your health. Yeah you might need to get to work, and you probably need to get there NOW, but you will never regret picking up a bag of salt and clearing that ice off your sidewalk/driveway.

  • Stay Safe!

We can’t stress this one enough. It might not have a lot to do with being a home owner, but it’s the most important item on this list. A slip and fall, or a car wreck will be a lot more devastating than a busted pipe and we can guarantee that! Stay safe and warm out there 417!

Is it too late?

We probably should have posted this checklist yesterday in hindsight, but it’s never too late to be prepared.

If your home or business has already experienced busted pipes, a caved in roof, or you just plain have your neighbors tree sitting on your living room couch. Know what who to call!

We will be here for you every step of the way! From the moment you call until you are back in your home, that looks better than ever. We are here for you!
